I am an adult and I never learned to read Arabic properly. Is it realistic to start from the beginning now?

Yes. Adults often make good progress when the lesson respects what they already know and does not rush them through the foundations. Starting carefully with letters, sounds and connected reading is more useful than pretending to be at a higher level simply because of age.
